Key project details

  • Project Value: $105,500
  • Project Duration: 6 months

Melbourne Polytechnic needed to upgrade their existing facilities and create a new Gas Commissioning Training Room.

This state-of-the-art facility, equipped with both natural gas and LP gas appliances, was built to accommodate the increased demand in the industry for gas servicing training. Designed to train apprentices and plumbing practitioners looking to up-skill in Type A gas appliance servicing, this complex project had to meet the stringent safety and regulatory requirements set by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV).

To address these challenges, Reliable Plumbing worked closely with Melbourne Polytechnic and ESV to design and implement compliant solutions. Key steps included:

  1. Consultation and Design:
    • Engaged with ESV to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
    • Developed solutions for ESV approvals and installation dispensations.
  1. Infrastructure Upgrades:
    • Underground Gas Line Installation: Installed a new gas line from the mains, including necessary excavation and site restoration, operating at 10 kPa.
    • Above-Ground Natural Gas Pipework: Set up a new gas meter, extended gas lines, and added safety controls for a gas flow of approximately 2000 MJ/hr.
    • LP Gas System Setup: Installed an external gas tank and a new manifold with copper pipework.
    • Specialised Safety Systems: Installed roofing ventilation, extraction, and pressure-proofing systems to ensure a safe environment.
  1. Installation of Gas Appliances:
    • Ensured all appliances met required standards. Installed and modified continuous flow water heaters, storage water heaters, ducted heaters, ovens, and cooktops to provide a comprehensive training experience.
  1. Roof Works:
    • Installed flues for 7 appliances, using pan flashing to prevent leaks.
  1. Integration with Gas-Guard Control System:
    • Worked with electricians to install a Gas-Guard control system, interlocked with solenoids, flow switches, gas detectors, and the fire system panel.
  1. Commissioning and Testing:
    • Conducted extensive testing of operating pressures, carbon monoxide levels, and ductwork airflow. Ensured safety controls in the Gas-Guard panels functioned correctly.
  1. ESV Involvement:
    • Coordinated with ESV throughout the project, including obtaining an exemption permit for the installation of outdoor gas appliances indoors and managing multiple site inspections.

The 6-month project successfully met all client and ESV requirements, resulting in:

  • Enhanced Safety and Efficiency: Significant improvements in the safety and efficiency of the gas supply infrastructure.
  • State-of-the-Art Training Facility: The upgraded facility supports advanced training programs, demonstrating Melbourne Polytechnic’s commitment to excellence, and ensuring their graduates are not just qualified, but truly skilled and ready to make a difference in the plumbing industry.
